This - together with Epitaph for a Spy and The Mask of Dimitrios - to me make up the essential Eric Ambler. He wrote very fine novels in the 1950s too, but he was a different author after he lost his faith; and there are several fine writers from the post-war generation, hardly anyone captures the 1930s Zeitgeist the way Ambler does.
Now all three are available on this site. You are a hero.
